The previous mosque, according to the CIOG could no longer accommodate the growing Muslim population in that community and, “Accordingly with the kind assistance of Zaakat House of Kuwait, the new structure is realized.”
According to the CIOG, “This new state of the art Masjid (mosque) will serve communities of the West Coast Demerara and East Bank Essequibo. This Masjid can accommodate approximately 500 worshippers, and provide an area that can stage social and cultural events.”
In a press release, the CEO of the CIOG, Al Haj Fazeel Ferouz expressed appreciation and thanks to the Zaakat House of Kuwait for “affording the Muslims of Guyana this unique Masjid. We also extend our thanks to all the governmental departments, officials and those that expedited the project to ensure its fruition in a timely manner.”
The foreign minister of Guyana, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, who was at the opening ceremony, praised religious harmony in Guyana. She has played an important role in supporting the Muslim community through her office.
